Hala Sultan Tekke, a mosque complex built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries just south of Larnaca, Cyprus, is said to be the third holiest place in the world for Muslims. The complex sits on the shore of a large salt lake, itself a protected area owing to its importance to thousands of migratory birds which spend the winter there. During the summer months the water evaporates leaving just a bed of salt, but winter rainfall fills the lake leading to the beautiful reflections seen here
